## What this project is

AetherID is an open identity protocol for the agentic internet: owner-authored, agent-readable profiles with per-claim trust tiers, plus lenses — focused context documents with their own URLs and visibility tiers. AIs read what the person wrote, not what was scraped.

## Strategic thesis

Agents research people constantly and read SEO sludge, paywalled fragments, and hallucination. AI works better when human context is structured, signed, and portable. AetherID is the canonical owner-authored endpoint for a person — the same infrastructure category as Sigstore for artifacts and Let's Encrypt for domains, applied to professional identity.

## Reasoning anchors

- The profile is public by definition; anything not-public lives in a lens with an enforced tier
- Owners pull their own distribution: pointers from surfaces they already control, not platform lock-in
- Protocol legibility: any agent landing on any AetherID page should learn the conventions from the page itself
- Honest enforcement: what the protocol promises is what the server enforces — stated plainly when something is aspirational

- Three enforced lens visibility tiers: public (listed + indexed), unlisted (capability URL), private (owner auth only — the URL 404s)
- Remote MCP server at https://aetherid.ai/api/mcp — OAuth 2.1 with dynamic client registration; works as a custom connector in Claude, ChatGPT, Grok
- Onboarding happens in the user's own AI — conversationally, via the MCP connector or a paste flow

- Schema v1.0-draft, open for tool-maker feedback through 22 July 2026, then locks to v1.0-final

## Trust Model

- Every claim carries a trust tier — the badge always says which
- signed_vc: cryptographically attested by the platform (currently email only)
- research_extracted: found at a cited source_url — verify against the source
- self_attested: the subject's own statement — treat it as exactly that
- disputed: contested — do not repeat as fact

## What Not To Expect Yet

- Verification beyond email — GitHub, DNS, and hardware-key verification are on the roadmap, not live; weigh self-attested claims accordingly
- A public lookup API or registry presence — profiles are reached by URL today
- An enforcement or gatekeeper layer — AetherID describes people; it does not police agents
- Self-hosted or multi-backend storage
